Though the domestic output of titanium concentrate ore is increasing year by year, China's dependence on titanium concentrate ore imports is still rising. The exporters of titanium concentrate ore tended to limit the export in recent years. Vietnam, China's largest supplier of titanium concentrate ore, has carried out restrictive policies on the export of titanium ore. In 2008, the import volume of titanium concentrate ore from Vietnam accounted for over 50% in China's total import volume. Up to 2012, the proportion decreased to less than 40%. Therefore, China has to develop more suppliers of titanium concentrate ore.
India and Vietnam are the nearest countries with abundant titanium resources. It is a good option to import titanium resources from there or invest in the production of titanium ore. Furthermore, the two countries are close to emerging markets, so it's recommended to invest in the production of titanium dioxide there.
Australia, South Africa, Madagascar and Mozambique are relatively far from China. It's better to invest in the production of titanium dioxide's upstream products such as titanium slag there and export these products. Nevertheless, it’s unwise to invest in the titanium dioxide production in these four countries, since the capacity of titanium dioxide is already relatively large in Australia while South Africa, Madagascar and Mozambique are far away from the consumption market of titanium dioxide.
Distributors in China became more and more specialized and are offering more services than before. What's more, along with the improving quality of domestic TiO2, domestic downstream consumers are gradually shifting their focus from imported TiO2 to domestic TiO2. In this context, CCM suggests that the overseas TiO2 producers should cooperate with more domestic distributors to expand their sales. By doing so, the price gap between direct sales and indirect sales may be narrowed, which will help to improve the competitiveness of imported products. As the imported TiO2 is now focusing on high-end market, CCM suggests that distributors should be chosen among powerful distributors chosen by the top producers of TiO2.
